Greetings, this is my first post.

End of last year I hit a rock at full speed. Motor ran for a bit (vibration) but quit and would not start when I slowed down. Put it away for the winter.

Got it started this year and took it for a quick spin (2 minutes). Now it will not go into forward or reverse.

Reverse has always been a problem since I got the motor used. Originally there was no reverse, but I adjusted the two nuts on the shift lever/rod and it would go into reverse with some 'ticking/clicking'.

I can spin the prop and can tell when it is in gear (both forward and reverse) by a cluck, increased resistance as I spin the prop & noise as I spin the prop, but as I turn the prop there is not enough resistance - it is not turning over the engine.

Any suggestions, what trouble shooting should I do to try to identify the problem? I don't even know what to look for if I open it up.

Thanks

Did you hit the rock with the lower unit or the prop?

You could have bent the prop shaft, which may have made the clutchdog problem worse, which appears to be worn.

Manual and lower unit tear down. Check for bent shaft and worn clutchdog.

The lower unit hit the rock and had a big ding. I took the hammer to it to staighten it out. The prop has its share of marks and dints from past close encounters.

Randy
