Hello, I have a 1977 OMC 190HP with electric shift. Just replaced ball gears and seals; everything seemed fine. After replacement of the gears started engine in nuetral left at an idle for awhile before trying to shift(out of water on muffs), when I tried to shift into forward the engine died quite abrubt and visciously. Where have I gone wrong? possible shift cable problem?

Re: Shift problem

You don't have a shift cable since it is an electric shift. Did you put in type "C" gear oil?

Re: Shift problem

Sounds like you are shifting into both fwd and rev. Check to make sure the shift wires are not bare and touching each other. Look at the boots around the knife disconnects.

Re: Shift problem

Just letting everyone know I fixed my shift problem. I stripped my shift, "wire/wires" not cable, coming out of the intermidete hsg and spliced them back together wrapped them in black tape and shrink-tubed to seal them. I noticed the wires/shift wire might have been damaged so I fixed it for now. I might need to replace the whole cable a little later down the road; not so sure I should trust black tape and shrink tube, but for now my OMC electric shift is SHIFTING fwrd & rvs!! Thanks a lot for the help everyone.

Re: Shift problem

You need the wires soldered together. If it goes intermittent and you go out and then back into gear at speed...you just wiped out your stern drive.
