Bravo 1 outdrive, shift cable pulls out when trying to shift in reverse. Is there some sort of clip that should lock the cable in place? I am trying to help a friend out.

Re: shift problems

i assume you are talking about the lower shift cable on the bracket and the rear anchor point. If so a cotter pin should be slid through the holes after the cable is all the way in the retainer.

Re: shift problems

I am talking about the end of the cable at the outdrive. I did not take it apart so I am not sure what was there. The cable appears to drop into a slot in the arm and another piece drops down to hold it in place. I am not sure where a cotter pin would go. I am gonna try and find a picture of what it should look like. Thanks Brian

Re: shift problems

That cable end should be put in the slot top clip comes down with the drive about 1 1/4" away from being bolted up, then push drive flush that forces clip and cable into drive, if the cable slips out either the cable end or the clip must be worn.
Look at parts #16 and #20. Those are the shifter parts you refer to having trouble with. Personally I've never seen any troubles with these so I'd have to agree with merrrdoc that something is either broke or worn.Btw in my earlier post I thought you were referring to the engine side of the cable.

Re: shift problems

Well I put it back together again with the engine side disconnected. I then sifted the outdrive into reverse and set the shift control to reverse. Then I connected the cable at the engine side so it would not pull any farther at the outdrive. I now have reverse without the cable disengaging. Thanks for all the help and the picture.
Brian
