Shift Rod, 1987 yamaha 30esh

well, i just ordered parts to replace the upper shift rod on my 30 short shaft. question . can i fish this rod up throught the mid section? . i can see the cotter pin that holds it in place below the carbs. not sure if the small bend on the top of the shaft will fit through hole in mid section. i'm waiting for a manual i ordered. also, i'm thinking maybe i can remove carbs and intake manifold from front of power head, then i can slide it down. if anyone has done this on this engine, i'd love some advice. jerry

all fixed. i was able to drop the old rod (with the bottom threads rusted off) down through the midsection. fed the new one up , had to loosen the square shaft (with lever) and slide to the starbaord side a little. needed 2 people to get the shaft through the small hole. 1 applied slight pressure on top of shaft, the other to shift ever so slowely. went right in. anyone else gonna try this, you can email me through this site. jerry
