:DI got a 72 evinrude 18 hp model # 18202R. The shift rod bushing and seal are given me a fit. Can anybody tell me how to remove the bushing to change the seal and gasket washer. It seems to be tight, don't wanna budge. My book tells nothing of changing this seal. The was bad to begin with, worse now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: #@$*?# shift rod bushing and seal

I recently replaced the o-ring on mine with the advice of my friendly neighborhood boat mechanic telling me that it was a probable cause of my water intrusion. I'm not familiar with your motor but to change mine I was told to not remove the brass bushing and simply dig the old one out with a small pair of needle-nose pliers and slip the new one in. It took some doing but I was able to spear the old one with a mini screwdriver and push the new one back into place with a pair of mini screwdrivers, making sure to put some oil on the new o-ring so it didn't tear. I did not replace the gasket.

You do not have to remove the bushing on the V-4 engines.
You DO have to remove the bushing on the small twins such as the 18hp. The o-ring is way to fat to go through the bushing.
