Shift rod bushing question

Working on my '68 evin 18hp fastwin. Model #18803M. I am putting in a new l/u seal kit. The only problem I have is installing the "fat" o-ring that seals the shift rod. There is a brass bushing in the l/u housing that appears to be pressed in on top of the old o-ring. I got the old o-ring out but cannot put the new one in without removing the brass shift rod bushing. I cant seem to get it out and am nervous that I will do damage if I try harder.

Is there a trick to getting that bushing out?

Do I need to take it out to replace the o-ring?

you can make a tool out of a 5/16 rod ground down to 1/4. and with a little heat on the outside of the case you should be able to pound it out

I made the rod out of the old metal on my kids crib and ground it down to a 1/4" conical end and it worked perfectly. Did not use heat and it popped right out. It needs to be long though as you have to tap it from the bottom up so I think it was around 16" or something like that...

I actually found a couple past threads on this subject after a little research.

What I ended up doing was use a 5/16 NF tap and cut threads about 1/2 way into the bushing. Threaded in the appropriate bolt. I used a 10" long 3/16 punch against the bottom of the bolt and drove the bushing out.

I'll let you know if she holds water...everything went back together fine.
