shift rod comes out or not ?

well yeah. I wanted to inspect the lower unit seals and water pump today on my 1987 evinrude 88spl... but came across the shift rod , don't know if is just this motor but the thing is I cant get a wrench in there an if it was possible ,,I see that the screw is on something like a clamp and there is like a pin holding the rod it self ...anyways I cant get it out ,,,, is there a trick to this you all ? how can I do this.......thanks

Ok got it ...read an other post. About the same thing ..only problem is mine dont have that bolt on the right of the clamp ....uuugggrrr

Follow these steps in order.-----Go to starboard side of the motor.----Find the hitch pin on the shift shaft.----Use a pair of needle nose pliers and remove the hitch pin.----Push the shift shaft to the port side of the motor.-----That releases the shift rod.
