1996 30hp. evinrude.

I have attached a pic of the shift rod connector.

-pic's in repair manual are slightly different(directions also).

?- which bolt turns.
? will the rod turn with the bolt. if so which is fixed.
? Do i run the risk of breaking the rod with too much torque.

Thanks,

You need two wrench's to part that coupler, when parted there is a tapered nylon bushing around the shift rod, make a note of which way it is directed

So hold the larger bottom bolt fixed. Turn the top bolt out of the the bottom. Neither rods should move?

Thanks for the info. It's my first time:)

The bottom ,if I remember is welded to the rod, but, the top should spin free from the rod,its possible they are a bit stuck together.Hold the bottom larger tight and put the powe to the thinner top nut,it shold break free. The rod that goes up to the motor is long,I doubt the bit of twist you may experience should not hurt anything.I wouldnt go more than a 1/4 turn if it dont break free. Spray some lube on the top rod,let it settle into the barrel nut.If all else fails, you can heat the larger nut, but, the nylon lock on the shaft may melt and need to be replaced. The nylon will only be visable after its appart,

If you have a set, or could borrow a set, this would be a good case for a flare-nut wrench such as used on brass gas fittings. This would save rounding off those brass fasteners. They are a box end wrench with a cut-out to go around the pipe or tube, if you have never used one.
