Shift rod disconnect 175 Johnson..HELP!

Trying to drop this lower unit. I got all the bolts loose on the bottom of the gear case and its ready to come off.
HOW in the world do you unhook the shift rod??
Do the carbs or manifold have to come off?
I looked on BRP exploded view and can't figure out how to unhook it..
GOD I NEED THE MANUAL!!
1981,175 johnson.. Any help or hints or is this easy and i'm just not seeing it?

still waiting for tow vehicle. looked at mine, the manual show nothing. looking at my 90hp, yes the carbs have to come off,

Got it off, Shifted it in reverse to move the rod down a little and got my little 3/8 drive swivel socket on the bolt.Backed it out except for a couple threads and the rod came right out. Only had to remove a fuel line and move some wires..
Putting it back together may be a whole other story.
I'll go take a few pics of the lower...its no good.
Only about 4 tablespoons of oil left in it.I turn the prop shaft and can hear it grinding like its full of crud

The mid section is going to be ok i think. Shot some paint on it until i get time to really sand it down slick..
