Adjusting the new shift cable doesn't throw the arm enough to engage reverse. It has "popped" into reverse but the RPMs are rising and i'm sure it will destroy something. I suppose the shift rod is not at correct length. Maybe it's the clutch dog, but I hope not.

What is the correct length for the shift rod? 1996 Johnson J150EXEDB

Pushing this thing off the trailer and docking are really hard with no reverse.

Need a little history on this. Did it start all of a sudden, have you worked on the g/c, have you got a manual on how to adjust the shift cable, does the linkeage all work freely ???

The shift rod height is adjustable on those models I believe. The spec for my '98 motor (J150EXECD) is 26-1/4" height. Since your motor is EX as well, it should be the same.
