I replaced my water pump today but somewhere in the process i must have turned my shift rod, and now i cant get it to line up. So it wont go in gear at all. My question is how do i figure out what the correct position for the shift rod is? The motor is a 1988 Johnson 88hp spl. Thank you.

Re: Shift rod problems

you should be able to adjust it with the end of the shift cable coming from control box on the motor side, loosten the 3/8 bolt holding the 2 cables in place and turn to direction you need whether its in or out

The adjustment must be made in the shift rod length, not the cable trunnion.

Re: Shift rod problems

Thanks for the replys I figured it out. The length was not the problem I had the shift rod on the right side of the linkage and not in-between the fork like thing so the pin was not engaged causing it not to shift. I had the seloc manual but it does not mention anything about connecting the linkage back Up. That Manuel is a POS.

One other thing to be aware of is that if the shift rod has an offset at the top,, this must face the driveshaft
