by forward I mean It wont go into neutral or reverse its stuck in forward. we did remove and put back the drain screws and that may have allowed the shaft rod to move.

the shift rod never left g/c we started working without a manual and got one in the middle of the job and the damage had already been done.

It was connected we tried to force it off then put it back togethter and read to take the upper shift linkage off we then removed it and it will not come out of forward.

Sounds like it's lower unit tear down time.

Yeah I think so, I'm taking the lower unit to a Johnson dealer tomorrow.

Did you try turning the propeller or even the flywheel a little while trying to shift? Admittedly, that trick usually helps a lot more when trying to get it into gear, as opposed to getting it out of gear.

Re: Shift rod problems

once you remove the lower unit & try to manually cycle thru the different gear positions with the lower unit detached, If you are unable to do so something most likely busted.

Re: Shift rod problems

the cradle where the bottom of the shift rod fits into had gotten spun around backwords when loosened up one of the screws in the lower unit, the one that holds shift rod in proper place. So 2.5 hours of labor later the johnson evinrude technician had the cradle back in correctly and shift rod adjusted to proper height and functioning correctly. He had to go in through driveshaft to get the cradle back in correctly.

That's why I like OEM Factory Service Manuals. I won't even work on my own mtr without one. Or any of my vehicals.

Glad you got it back together. Would you mine letting me know what the dealer shop cost was? I'm in the same boat (no pun intended!) and know what has to be done, I just don't have the time or patience right now to do it myself. I know different shops in different areas charge more/less, just curious at what they charged you. Thanks.
