Shift Rod Question

Changed my impeller the other day and have yet to water test it. Question is how do i make sure I have the shift linkage lined up right? When I put it in neutral the prop spins freely, and when I put in Forward or Reverse the prop does not move at all.

I guess I'll know if it's right when I take her out in the lake later this week, but if it's not right is there any risk of damage to anything?

Re: Shift Rod Question

The new impellar/ and being connected to the powerhead is making resistance.

It should move a little. But not a lot it should be really hard to move

I am no expert, just talking from experince, did the same thing yesterday. new Gaskets seals and oring in the lower unit.

Re: Shift Rod Question

The 80's Forces lower unit removal and install are real simple when you take them apart. There is usually only one way to get them back to where you started.Jerry

Re: Shift Rod Question

From neutral to forward and reverse with a good sink feel and equal movement on the linkage should say you are centered, ?I would Think???? Cheating Me! I pull the cotter pin in the leg vs disconnecting ?My Marked Linkage? that works also. Pulling the cotter in an option on my 1973 35HP Chrysler w/o knowing if this will work on other models (maybe 45 and 55 HP cousins). Jow

Re: Shift Rod Question

All I did was pull the cotter pin. And yes when I shift the linkage moves up and down equally. Sounds like I should be good.

Re: Shift Rod Question

To me, just pulling the cotter pin vs a linkage adjustment, put you back in your ?Old Position?. jow
