Shift Rod Seal replacement

1983 75 HP Evinrude. I am replacing all the seals in the LU. Air was blowing through the drive shaft seal. I also noticed a small bubble coming from the shift rod every once in a while when I put 5 lbs of pressure in it. I took the upper drive shaft bearing housing off, and now have removed the shift rod cover and from my Seloc it shows an 0-ring and gasket under the bushing. My question is how to get the bushing out so I can replace the o-ring and gasket. I have read in the forums that some people say you don't have to remove the (brass ?) bushing but pick out the o-ring and replace with the new one. That sounds pretty hard to do and how would you replace the gasket under the o-ring? Should I use heat or take a vise grip to the bushing and try to muscle it out? I see it mentioned a lot to replace the shift rod o-ring but nothing really about how to do this.

Thanks for the help I appreciate it.

Re: Shift Rod Seal replacement

Good question. I need to do this as well for a motor I'm rebuilding, but I haven't been able to find any good info on how to do it. Hopefully someone can give us a good answer.

Don't get this one confused with what you may have read about smaller motors where the bushing does have to come out. In fact, I don't think the bushing will come out of this one. It probably is cast in there when they made the cover. Pick it out, and squeeze the new one double and shove it in there. Easy.

I don't see any gasket or separate bushing listed. Are you sure? Of course there is the cover gasket listed, but that is pretty self-evident.

Re: Shift Rod Seal replacement

The Seloc had two different configurations. I thought the one I had was the one with a gasket and o-ring. The other just had an o-ring the picture with the gasket resembled mine.

Needless to say, you are right on the mark I used a small screwdriver to get the old o-ring out (much larger than I thought it was, and inserted it again to make sure I can do it. The new one will be folded in 1/2 and as you said just sort of pops in, you may have to work it a little but it goes right in. Thanks F_R I thought I had to get the bushing out, but as you said it appears to be cast in there so thanks it would have been a costly mistake at approx $120.00 for that cover.

This was easy to replace imagine I was going to leave it be since I didn?t know how to get it in or out. I should make a video on how to do a LU reseal and post it on You Tube.

Take care and Happy Holidays to all.
