Trying to remove lower unit, just need the shift rod to separate. However, I do not see any sort of pin to remove like I've read on other posts. There is a long hex nut on the rod but cannot turn it, and don't want to force or break the shift rod. Do I have the right part of the lower unit separated? If so how do I get the shift rod apart? HELP..Please!

Re: Shift Rod Separation No Pin??

the long hex on the shift rod is locked with a nut at the top..just loosen the locknut 1/4 turn. Then turn the long hex bit away from the nut ..after about 3/8 it will seperate ..put the gear change in whatever is the up for the rod positon.......easy to put back...... thread the long hex onto the bottom bit ..LH thread !!! until about 1/2 in from the bottom of the thread ..engage top part and screw up till you meet your lock nut ....EPLS

Re: Shift Rod Separation No Pin??

Thanks, but on mine there is no lock nut in top of the long hex, instead looks like someone has put a small weld to hold the hex nut to the shift rod!!!!!! I really don't want to remove the lower gear housing. Guess I will have to replace the shift rod anyway?? Unless there is a way to remove the shift rod in another place higher up?
