Hey guys, I have a 1963 40hp evinrude long shaft. It's been sittin awhile. I dropped the lower unit to service the water pump. The shift lever seemed stuck before I pulled the lower unit. Problem seems to be the shift rod is fozen where it enters the gear case housing, shift lever works fine at power head. I dismantled the gear case, all seems to be fine at the shift lever but the rod definitely seems to be stuck where it enters the gear case. A couple guys on the 24th advised to use an impact screw driver to remove stubborn screws and it worked like a charm. I'm really grateful to all the folks in this forum. Still need to know why the rod is so stuck? I don't see a rubber grommet or bushing at the entry point.
