i got 1995 yamaha 150. i need to change water pump. i looked on youtube. they just show how to remove the foot, not nothing about the shift rod,if in fact u have to disconnect it. i know how to remove a foot[lower unit], whatever by removing the bolts. does the shift rod has to be disconnected if so how and where? my overheat alarm comes on. i changed the 2 thermostats, and it still comes on. any help appreciated, along with videos and text thanks.

look at the parts diagram for your motor.
I believe all of the large motors have a splined shaft so you do not have to disconnect anything

And if it's the splined shaft be sure to clean the splines with a wire brush and apply marine grease to them so they always slide together and apart easily for lower unit removal.....same with bolt threads that hold the lower unit in place....same with upper drive shaft splines....
