Working on the shift shaft cover for a 200hp Johnson (J200PLEEN).
I removed one O ring from inside the cover. I'm sure that's the only one that was in there.
The Sierra kit I purchased contains two O rings.
The parts diagram shows two O rings go into the cover.
I was able to get one ring into the cover. Getting two will present a challenge.
Does this model require two O rings in the cover?
Any tips on getting the second one in?
Thanks in advance.

First get the second one out if there is a second one in yours.-----Only the later covers used 2 O-rings and therefor the kits come with 2 O-rings.----If there is only one O-ring in your cover then consider getting a newer cover to make an improvement in sealing !

Sure there was only one.
Got one in and it looks like there might be room for the second one but proving difficult to get second O ring installed?

If the cover had the 2 grooves for the 2 O-rings it would be easy.----And as I have stated your lower unit may not be original to a 1999 model.----Hurry and get the cover made for the 2 O-rings in there.-----Nothing is " difficult " on these simple lower units.----Just my opinion.

Racer, thanks to your response on another thread I started, I've discovered that the lower unit is from an older model.
From the diagrams looks to be 1989 or older. These only used one O ring.
thanks again.

On my '98 Johnny V6, the aluminum shift pocket cover corroded and "swelled" to grab the shift rod and make movement difficult. I new shift pocket cover, with it's new orings solved the problem.

Replaced shift pocket seal as part of lower unit seal kit.
No problem with shifting before install.
But, I'll consider your suggestion if shifting becomes difficult.
thanks
