Yes I need help again, I have a 1972 Johnson 50 HP hydroelectric shift and my shift switch is bad and I heard that you can use a three way toggle in place of it until I can afford the part, I need help on the wiring could you tell me which wires to connect to which parts of the new switch it is a 3 way on off on toggle with 2 feeds to each selection THANKS

(Toggle Shift Switch Setup For The Hydro Electric Shift Unit)
(J. Reeves)

Due to the unavailability of the "Push Button" (Evinrude) or "Toggle Type" (Johnson) shift switch that is required for the "Hydro Electric Shift" type lower units that existed between 1968 and 1972, many boaters have asked how they could rig up a toggle switch to perform this shifting function. There may be much better solutions but the following is what I have come up with.

One must keep in mind that wiring a toggle switch in such a manner allows one to accidently shift from forward to reverse at full throttle. This could and probably has resulted in injuries to boaters, not to mention the mechanical damage. Should this or any other problems arise/occur, I am in no way to be held responsible for the toggle switch to shift switch replacement mentioned here.

For the above reason, I strongly suggest that the toggle switch have a hinged hard case cover installed over it so that the toggle can never be thrown/toggled accidentally.

Now, with a single pole double throw toggle switch installed so the the "Green" wire connection is facing up or away from you, make the following connections to the terminals on the back of the toggle switch.

......O <--- Green Wire

......O <--- 12 volt Supply

......O <--- Blue Wire

Now, between the Green wire and Blue wire terminal on the toggle switch, connect a diode capable of handling 12 volts (available at Radio Shack etc). Be sure to install the diode so that the voltage will travel from the Blue wire connection to the Green wire connection only...... and not vice versa!

Now, if you have installed the switch as above, with the toggle pulled all the way back (towards yourself), contact will be made between the 12v supply and the Green connection. This puts the unit in Neutral. The diode prevents any voltage from gaining access to the Blue connection.

Pushing the toggle lever to the middle position results in no voltage being supplied to either wire. This results in the spring loaded clutch shifter dog in the lower unit throwing the unit into forward gear.

Pushing the toggle switch lever all the way to the front position will have the center 12 volt supply connected to the Blue wire connection, and due to the diode, that 12 volt supply will also be supplied to the Green wire. This results in having the unit in reverse gear.

Re: shift switch to 3 way switch HOW???

That's clever, using the diode. Use a little overkill in selecting the diode, i.e. maybe 50 volts x 5 amps as a minumum. Same thing without the diode will work on the earlier spring clutch electric shifts. In that case, center = neutral; throw one way = forward; throw other way = reverse.

Re: shift switch to 3 way switch HOW???

OK I found my blue, green, and 12 volt source wires but there is also a purple/green wire and 2 white wires that led into the switch what are they and where do they tie in at. I bought a double pole double throw switch do i need to use a single pole ??? Sorry I am great with motors but not the Einestein of wiring. Thanks for all your help, and I understand you are not liable for any damage to my boat or personal, the idea of a cover is a good idea

Is there any way to make my hydro electric work like that so i dont have to go from forward to reverse without having nuetral in the middle, not good on the motor!!!

Re: shift switch to 3 way switch HOW???

To shift from one gear to the other, avoiding neutral, just move that toggle extremely fast.

The white wires were a neutral safety circuit within the original switch. Simply join them together. BUT keep in mind that this allows one to start the engine in gear at various throttle settings SO be sure the engine is in neutral at a low throttle setting when starting.

The Purple/Green wire should be the 12v source supply and having that 12v source only when the key is in the ON and START position.

Thank you very much for all your help I will try it out after I get off work with a single pole switch

Re: shift switch to 3 way switch HOW???

I would never use a push pull switch like for running lights wired so all the way in is fwd,one click out is N and all the way out is rev.
not me :)
the switch will be labeled off,on circuit one and on circuit 1 and 2.
ten bucks or so at most any parts or marine store.

Re: shift switch to 3 way switch HOW???

I need some help here. I have wired a toggle switch up as directed. It works as the post says it should. With the exception of having the diode in there. Is there someone who can draw me a sketch of the toggle switch wired up with the diode? How do you know you got the diode cgoing from one wire to the next and not the opposite direction. I have never used diode's before.

Also the motor cranks it's butt off, but will not start at all. I put new plugs in it. Does it have to do with the way I have it wired, or is there another problem?

HELP!!!!!!

If you look at the diode, one end has some kind of a stripe on it, point the stripe at the green wire.

OK. Will try to see what I can do. But, does it not starting have anything to do with not having the diode in there. Also, when putting the Diode on it, how do you hook up the diode? Do you bend the Diode around the connecters on each end or what? Like I said before - I have never used these.

Re: shift switch to 3 way switch HOW???

You need to solder the diode to the switch legs for the best connection. As far as the starting, did you connect the two white wires together? If so, then you have a new problem not related to the switch.

I do not have two white wires that I know of. thanks. Will tinker with it some more.
