Mercury Shifter on 2001 Mercury 125 ELPTO. Yesterday at the lake it was idling fine. right around 800 rpms. after running across the lake at WOT then coming into neutral it was idling at 1600 rpms. When shifting into gear at this idle a loud clunk occurs due to the idle to high. The shifter feels different now when using it. Seems like when shifting into forward gear there is a lot of play once shifted into gear and throttling up. Reverse is harder to get into gear it seems. The high idle has happen before and soon after corrected itself...not sure what the cause of this is but I don't think it would be the idle screw, seems to me that the shifter and linkage may be to far advanced when in neutral...is this even possible? any suggestions would be great. thanks.

my money's on a cable kink. put into nuetral and
temp. disconnect cable, start it up and see what
the idle is. it's free and if'n it's still idling
too high, you have eliminated 1 poss.
good luck,
M.Y.

how would you do that. i am some what technically inclined but only have had the boat for 5 months. I have two cables going into the cover of the engine. one is for shifting into reverse and forward the other for the throttle? i think.... the one with the throttle is the one I should disconnect...correct??

Where do kinks usually happen, inside the hull or somewhere visable before it goes into the hull?
