Shifter problem

1998 Evinrude 50 E50ESLECC..clutch dog disintegrated so I’ve overhauled the lower unit. Now, upon reassembly, I can’t get it to shift properly. Motor starts well and while in neutral all seems well. It will go into either forward or reverse and then I can’t get it back to neutral. I’ve had this apart a few times now and while on the bench, it seems to perform ok. When I take off the lower unit, I can’t manually operate the shifter until I take it all apart and reassemble. Feel like I’m missing something here. Nothing changed on the controls and the motor had worked well for many years until the clutch dog ate it’s lunch. Any hints or suggestions? New parts include clutch dog and pin, spring that holds the pin in place, indent balls and new spring, new gears, bearings and seals.

That would be correct.----It takes a bit of effort to move the shift rod when lower unit is off.----The pivot pin and cradle are assembled correctly ?

Thank you Racerone for your input...I pulled the lower unit off, disassembled it all (again), checked and doubled checked that the everything was right. Put it back on and it now works! I don’t know why this time ( and mystery fixes bug the sh*t out of me) but in the end all seems good. Test drive went well, I think I’m good to go!
