shifter tools?

my 1986 omc 800 is mechanical shift and the lower shift cable went bad, so I'm replacing it. The shifter thing inside the exhaust housing that the cable goes into has gotten me stumped.... I took off the little plate on the bottom to reveal 2 pulleys that the cables wrap around, although it seems there's no room for the cable ends to go around them unless I can take the pulley wheels out. So on the larger wheel I took out the metal plug to see a little metal nub thing. The smaller one has something that looks similar but isn't covered by the cylindrical metal plug. Are these spindles that go through the pulley wheels? If so, how do I get them out? Do they take special tools? Any help would be incredibly appreciated!

Thanks

Do you have the new cable yet?

Buy part # 982563 from your local BRP dealer.

It's expensive but it will solve your problem entirely.

Re: shifter tools?

You may notice that the shaft has a threaded portion on its end.The special tool screws onto the shaft and uses another nut on the outside of the housing. As you tighten the nut the shaft will be pulled out. I fabricated one of my own tools from a bolt just large enough to fit inside the hole in the housing, with threads longer than the housing.I then drilled the middle of the bolt and tapped to what I believe was 1/4-20( the thread on the end of the shift shaft). Now just put a nut all the way on your bolt, and screw the bolt onto the shift shaft and use the nut to pull it clear.

Re: shifter tools?

thanks for the helpful info! Yes I eventually did notice that the end was threaded and was lucky enough to have a sleeve thingy threaded inside with a somewhat similar thread. So...a pair of vise-grips, a pry bar, and a clamp all aided in extracting that bugger.
