I have a 1987 Mercruiser 165 with a 1st generation Alpha One Stern drive. I had to disassemble the lower shifting cable that goes from the motor to the gimble housing for repairs. It used to shift fine. After I put it back together, it isn’t. I found a document that said to put the boat in forward and adjust the cable to be 6 inches from the bolt at the end of the cable to the small brass barrel adjuster. I did that and I had forward working. Then I shift into reverse and it works. All good, right?

Nope. Because if I shift back to forward it won’t even click like it’s trying. I can get one gear but never both. The only change I ever made was to the lower shifter cable. I never touched anything else.

Describe how you removed it and the reason you removed it. Simply unhooking everything dosent usually chance any adjustments and if you assembled it wrong that could be the issue or you had a drive issue that was overlooked
