96 Force 50hp - After replacing impeler pump - went to the lake and shifted into reverse and foot would not come out of reverse. Removed foot. Lower shifter shaft seams to have come disconected. I can push down on the shaft and its in reverse. I was able to play with the shaft 1 time and get into Fwd. Where do i go from here?

You unscrew the shift shaft?
Profile?Location?You might be close to someone who can help.
You might have to take the retainer/cover off and look inside???

How do you remove the retainer cover. I'm thinking its held down by the water pump cover and in place by the o-ring on the cover. So should i just put a puller on the shifter shaft? LaGrange, GA

Heath;

Here is the parts list for your engine:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/1696.cfm

See the shift shaft setup under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY (DRIVESHAFT)

The retainer is item 29 and you will see it when you remove the boot, item 28. Then look down inside the cavity and see if the shaft, item 33 is properly connected to the cam, item 36 with pin, item 37.
