Shifting gear

Hi all,
Have a 7.4 MPI with a bravo III drive. Recently it has started to delay when shifting into fwd gear. It goes into reverse fine and everything else is okay. Sometimes takes up to 5 secs to shift in after moving the selector fwd. It can be hurried up if I increase revs. Is this just a case of needing to adjust the cable?
Cheers,

Re: Shifting gear

It might be a simple adjustment, or it could be low on gearlube, or the thru-transom shift cable needs replacing. I'd bet on the last, but am hoping for the first.

Re: Shifting gear

I'm with Willy, while it would be nice to just adjust the problem away, those cables just doen't suddenly get out of adjustment. If the drive oil is full and doesn't have water in it, the cable is the most likely problem.
The outer sheeth of the cable gets worn from the inner sheath allowing a lot more slop in the cable. Once that happens, there is not enough movement to push the cable all the way into gear, and with the cone clutch it's slow to engage.

Thanks, guess I'll give it to the mechanic to check. The drive reservoir looks full.

Re: Shifting gear

Lanealot,
There is an interupter switch that momentarily stalls the engine. If this switch is not working correctly or if the plate spring arrangement that it is mounted on is not adjusted correctly this may be your problem.

Re: Shifting gear

Interupter switch Dis-Engages the drive, not used for engaging.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

He has a Bravo III, no interupt switch. That switch is only on Alpha drives.

Re: Shifting gear

Couple of things here... what kind of oil are you using? Oil too thick can do this also. AND... If the drive is too full it can also cause this. There are grooves in the cone that bleed the oil out. If the oil can't get out, the cone wont engage properly.

Before you replace a cable, check the detent ball in the shift linkage. they sometimes rusted themselves "stuck" (hard shifting) Mercruiser changed the linkage to make this detent smoother...

Re: Shifting gear

WRT oil it only gets OEM stuff. The shift is not hard to move, it feels completely normal. It just does not engage the drive straight away. When it does you can sense/feel it as you normally would. It just takes too long and as I said reverse engages immediately.
Thanks for all the input.

Re: Shifting gear

I've got a similiar issue on a low hour (105 hour) Bravo I outdrive.
Forward works great, but putting this thing in reverse sometimes means a 3-4 second delay, which isn't good when you're headed into a dock or trying to trailer....

Chance that this is adjustment related?

Any how-tos on adjusting the shafter cable on a Bravo? I assume you do it at the control side....

Re: Shifting gear

Will do, Don.
As my issue is the same as the above posters, I assume it would be better to *not* start a new thread on the same topic.. :)
