I have a 1984 Yamaha 90hp ET LN on my 15 Whaler. Today I went out and plained off and heard this loud thump like I hit something with my prop and the engine power died and the went into neutral. It would not go forward only in reverse, even when I put it in Forward. To make this sound even more weird when I shut it off and start it up it starts in reverse even when it's in neutral. Sorry soooo long but what should I do??
Thanks

Re: Shifting Gears

First, check the condition of your gearlube. Internal gearcase problems can usually be predetermined by that. It could also be a throttle/shift control problem, or perhaps the cable anchor in either the control or motor slipped out of place. Or perhaps the shift cable broke the core wire. Disconnect the end from the shift mechanism in the motor. If it broke inside, you'll be able to pull the end right out of the cable.
