1977 appears to be the last year of the 85 hp Merc. Do you have a s/n?

First thing to do for the shifting question is disconnect the shift cable from the engine and shift it by hand. If it feels good, with the cable still disconnected, move the gear shift through it's range to see if you have a cable problem.

its not hard to shift, the engine jerks hard when it does shift.

maybe i used to have a i/o and i believe it had a little switch on it to stall the engine while shifting. just wondering if this one had it too. thank you very much.

Nope. For the sake of the gears in the lower unit, the idle MUST be less than 1000rpm, and ideally should be around 600-700.
