So we inherited this engine it's in pretty good shape cosmetically we're trying to get it running good but once we have it I linked it'll shift into forward but is grinding gears going into reverse and won't go in. When the engine is off if we turn the propeller while trying to shift into reverse it'll go into reverse easily until it hits a spot it won't go in and then the propeller turning a little bit more it'll go back into gear in reverse. Appreciate any assistance with this.... Also when the shift rod that pushes up out of the lower unit goes into forward gear it hits this little flipper thing that moves up does anybody know what that is and is it supposed to be moving that spring loaded little flipper

Get a Factory service manual. The little "flipper" is for reverser lockout of tilt. Sounds like you need to adjust the shift coupler.
