Shifting issues and dieseling

Hi I just bought a new used boat, Its a reninell 181brxl with the 4.2liter HO motor its a 1993. The motor ran great on the flush attachement and ran great for first hour of use, super quick and fast loaded with 7 people so it seems very strong. The first problem I noticed was when trying to start the boat the straight up position where the throttle control is locked in the straight up positon will not allow the boat to start but u have to actually go slightly back maybe 15? to find the start postion is this normal or does linkage need adjustment and if so how to adjust it? Also normally clunks into gear and I think this may be caused by idle being two high, boat says 1200rpm but not sure to believe this or not as on the lower end the rpm gauge bounces all over but at wide open its 5k rpm. The throttle control isn't sticking at all very smooth. Also when pulling straight back to the locked center position the boat is still in gear and were still moving untill I pull it back and find that slight back postion then I can move it back to the locked postion and it stays in neutral.

The next problem is after running it wide open and then shutting it right down it was diesling. After doing this many many times we broke down in the lake got towed back. Took all the plugs out and all cylinders had water in them it wouldn't turn over with all the water in there. We turned it over with the plugs out and blew out all the water sprayed some wd40 in the cylinders and retested it and it ran great beside the shift issue for over an hour but we let it idle for 60 seconds or so each time before turning it off. I have heard diesling can cause this water issue there is not water in oil at all. I was running just regualr gas and have also read that running higher octane can help this problem out? I suspect the diesling is caused by the shift linkage and throttle control not being set up right but am not sure how to adjust this or if there is any other better explanations?

Thanks Alan

That would tend to do that, you need to let the temp stabilize first before shutting it off.think it should be 650-750 in gear, in the water.clunking into gear is normal for Alpha`s. you need "a positive shift" and not baby it into gear.

Re: Shifting issues and dieseling

Some mistakes in my original post its a 4.3ho OMC engine with a cobra outdrive. I thinkI understand that dieseling problem and how it happened and how to prevent it from happing again but my shift linkage is all screwed up in this boat.

IN order to get boat to start the linkage has to be slightly pulled back beyond dead center aprox 15? from straight up and down. This just does not seem right to me at all. When puliing out of gear and into the straight up position as should be neutral boat continues to move forwards. If u slightly pull back a little more it plops into neutral and then u can go back to center position and still be in neutral but it won't start in this position if u turn it off. I have to pull if back slightly to start ie 15? even though it was in neutral. The shift assist switch and that whole dual mechanisim is throwing me off as to how to adjust this and I have found what is suppossed to be these directions but I can't follow these. Please help with pictures of what there talking about if anyone has any ideas

"5 Steps of the Engine Shift Bracket Adjustment"
1. Forward Overstroke Adjustment ( what is the forward overstroke I just don't understand what there talking about? )
Center the cable anchor located in the angled slot on the top of the shift lever. Install the remote control shift cable, control box in FORWARD GEAR FULL THROTTLE. Pull out on the casing guide to remove any slack. Adjust the shift cable trunnion to center the forward (fixed) overstroke cam with the switch button on the overstroke switch. ( what is the center cable anchor located in the angle slot on the top of the shift lever? I think there talking about on the motor? The remote control shift cable seems to be the top one but what is the fixed overstroke cam and switch button on the overstroke switch?)

2. Forward Gear Engagement

Install the transom bracket shift cable ( the lower one or the upper one? ), control box is still in forward gear full throttle. PULL OUT ON THE TRANSOM BRACKET SHIFT CABLE TO FULLY ENGAGE THE CLUTCH DOG WHILE SOMEONE ROTATES THE PROPELLER. Make sure you pull back on the shift cable to remove all the end play from the system as you adjust the black barrel trunnion. When installed correctly and all slack is out of the system the load lever ( what is the load lever?)will "rock upward stiffly" and "rock downward easily" but should always center itself! ( center itself?)

3.Reverse Gear Engagement

Shift the control box into REVERSE GEAR FULL THROTTLE, loosen the 7/16" nut in the angled slot at the top of the shift lever on the shift bracket. PUSH DOWN on the shift lever while someone rotates the propeller to FULLY ENGAGE THE CLUTCH DOG. While holding down on the shift lever, remove all slack from the remote control shift cable by pulling its casing guide to the rear of the boat. Be careful not to preload the system. Then tighten the 7/16" nut securely. When adjusted properly, and all play removed, the load lever will "rock downward stiffly" and "rock upward easily", but will always center itself. (same questions here? )

4. Reverse Overtroke Adjustment

Adjust the reverse overstroke cam to center itself with the switch button on the overstroke switch (3/8" nut). The control box is still in reverse gear full throttle. "PW thru RG" (sic) models will probably not have a reverse overstroke cam. ( same as the first step so same questions and what is a PW thru RG sic model? )

5. Throttle Cable Adjustment

Install and adjust the throttle cable. Control box should be moved into the forward gear idle position, then half-way back to neutral. Tension on the cable should be only enough to positively close the throttle plates. Excessive tension will cause the shift system to bind. (Unit should shift no harder with the cable installed than with it removed). (DO I even have to or need to adjust the throttle cable if this seems fine? )

Thanks anyone for any help I'm pulling my hair out with out pictures and I got that information from this web site http://www.barrysmarine.com/cobra/kw-shift.html

Now run the unit and check for smooth positive shifting, also check for proper operation of the ESA system by making the running checks at the engine shift bracket! Service Kits are available to upgrade the ESA module to the latest pulse pattern, time duration and RPM limits (SB #4099).

Re: Shifting issues and dieseling

OK, you have a couple of things to do before you go play in the boat again. Work out the shift adjustment so it's in neutral when straight up. Learn to operate the fast idle control, normally you either push a button in the throttle stick, or on some controllers you pull out the stick to get it.
If it's dieseling it's from a couple of possible things. Yes, it could be from shutting down immediately after a hard run, It can also happen from the idle being too high-you want a maximum of around 625 RPM in gear. It can happen from a lean mix on the idle jets in the carburetor, and it can be related to timing too advanced.
Dieseling is really bad for a boat engine, it sucks water into the combustion chambers and if too much water gets in one hole while another one fires/diesels - you could get broken pushrods.
Fix it before using it or you could break your engine in an expensive way.

Yea for sure I know but in order to fix it I need to know how to adjust it in plain english with pictures would really help alot. I posted the 5 steps and where I'm lost in those 5 steps. Timing is good idle maybe a little high but shifting is way the f off. Help.

Thanks ALan

Re: Shifting issues and dieseling

The idle setting should be 600 rpm. Adjust the idle to a point where the engine wants to stall. Replace the rpm gauge to get an accurate reading. And you should be running 89 octane for fuel, 87 will cause deiseling.
