I have 1991 mercruiser 3.0 with alpha one drive. As quick background this spring I have replaced the lower shift cable as well as the throttle cable, after doing so I had no issues with shifting other than the lever was still a bit stiff. I have decided to replace the control cable as well and since I have done so I have been having issues. When I have installed it as per instructions matching the length to the lower shift cable and then backing off 4 turns. When I install the shift assist I am having issues getting it in gear I need to have the cable extended forward a lot which also increases the throttle which makes the shift in gear very unpleasant at now high RPMS. It seams that shift assist is pushing the lower shift cable out too far preventing the gear from engaging. When I remove the shift assist it shifts forward without any issues however when shifting in reverse the engine dies. My guess is the issues is the kill switch engaging too long. Again before I switch the cable there were no issues (other than stiff shifting). I am sure there has to be something simple I am missing hope all of you brilliant guys with your vast knowledge will be able to help me out.
