Have a 1975 johnson elect start, short shaft. Use it mostly for river fishing here in Texas. just started having this problem when I'm going up river full throttle the motor jumps out of gear into neutral, I can hold it in gear but know that's not good!! Took it to dealer they said no metal shavings in lower unit and they couldnt get it to jump out of gear. HAve it on a 14 ft flat bottom aluminum wide boat. Can anyone help??

What do you mean, you can hold it in gear? Are you sure this is an electric?A model # might be nice.

Re: shifting out of gear help!!!!!

Sorry ,got electric start confused with electric shift. They make both you know and that is why it is so important that you let us know what you have by way of horsepower, brand, etc etc etc.
Your problem might well be solved with a simple shift cable adjustment,or may require that you enter that gearcase and give it an inspection.Let us know what you've got then we can really help you.

The clutch dog and forward gear need to be replaced. If its not already been done the new parts will come as the upgraded pieces for the snap shift style. Its a very easy swap.

Good luck!
