Ok, I replaced the bellows and impeller the other day, then boat wouldn't shift into neutral or reverse. Pulled the drive off and seperated and still the same after making sure both parts were in forward. Now im thinking its the shift cable maybe being stretched because the roller was having a hard time in the booth?

Ideas?

Its a 1989 alpha one Gen 1 that has been sitting for about 4 years

With the drive on and the lower shift cable disconnected at the engine, it should shift easily by hand. You can isolate whether it is the lower shift cable or the helm control side causing the problem...

Sounds possible...The shift cable-pushes the the fork on the end of the cable into forward. Did you check the operation of the cable when the drive was off-put shift lever into neutral or reverse to see if the cable retracted [toward the transom] ? Some where it sounds disconnected. The cable pushes, but wont pull-the shift lever into n or R.. Did u try adjusting the cable ?

Did you forget the washer on the top of the lower shift shaft? If so, it will not shift when put back together.

I did check the operation of the shift before I took it apart ant it was working, it just seems to me like the cable is stretched?

And i will check and see about the washers

Thanks everyone
