shifting Problem

what is a shifter assist in a mercruicer 5.0 engine had problem shifting look like it was jamming in the shift plate both my shift cable are just attach to the plate with a screw saw a you tube video and there is something called a shift assist is there a schematic on the shift plate

heard is was for people with weak wrists to aid in reducing the shift lever pressures , dosent work anyway.
A properly maintained shifting system dosent need it

is there a schematic that I can see if there's any parts missing I have a 2000 mercruiser 5.0 the boat is a bayliner 2252 ciera express
