shifting problems

hello everyone, i have 88 serray with 4.3l4 205 hp with alpha 1 drive. Went out last night had to get towed in. I think the lower shift cables might have broke or something. how can i tell if this is the problem

Will it go into reverse?? if yes then its probablly the lower shift cable.

Welcome to iboats.....:)
Well, the engine won't go into gear would be a symptom......
You would need to pull the drive & check manually if it will go into gear.....
Describe in more detail what occurred, ie shifter did not want to move....
Shifter moved wouldn't go into gear....ETC.....
This will help with a diagnosis.....
A bad lower shift cable is not an unusual problem.....

Why don't you tell us what happened, what it's doing (or NOT doing) that would be better than asking about what a broken shift cable would do.

Ok thanks for all the info.... Here is a short summary of what happened... was cruising about 15 knts motor started to bog then the tranny started slipping then some clunking noises then it started reving like it pop out of gear. and thats it. oh it stalls when i try to put it in reverse

whats the condition of the oil in the drive,if any? may have taken out the upper unit.
