Shifting question

I removed the lower unit of my 1998 Johnson 25 HP to replace the impeller. When I put the lower until back on and connected the shift shaft I am not sure things are correct. With the shifter in forward, should I be able to move the prop? What about in neutral and reverse. I want to make sure everything is ok before I try to start it.

Thanks,
Neil

Re: Shifting question

With the shift in forward the prop will move about 1/6 of a turn back and forth. The dog tooth shifter has that charastic. Neutral should be free and reverse is like forward. It is acutally best to have someone slowly turn the prop when shifting with the engine off so that engagement occurs properly.

Re: Shifting question

ok, so it sounds like I have a problem... In forward the prop spins freely. In neutral and reverse it will spin about a 1/4 turn both ways. It worked properly before I installed the new water pump, what do I need to look at to correct this?

Thanks..

Question. The upper shift shaft was rotated a number of times, could this be causing the problem?

Re: Shifting question

yep, that changes the throw distance (length) of the shift rod.
