Shifting Rod

Hello all, I need some help. I have an 87 Johnson 150GT the shift rod has to much play in it. When I adjust cable it will either go into forward and neutral or reverse and neutral. Just bought boat from individual and trying to get it going. The rod will engage when done by hand in all gears is there an adjustment inside motor to tighten rod? Thanks for the help in advance.

First step is to remove lower unit to set the shift rod height.

If by removing the shift cable from the engine, then by hand shifting the engine via the engine's shift linkage... the engine shifts normally...... the problem would be with the control box or the shift cable, or a combination of both... NOT the engine.

The above holds true... UNLESS... someone has had the lower unit off for some reason AND turned the shift rod out of its critical adjustment.
