shifting trouble

I've got a 1986 Fourwinns 17' with a 140hp mercruiser, alpa one. The previous owner replaced the shift cable. The problem I'm having is that it doesn't like to come out of reverse, it will, without grinding or anything if you slam it but it does get stuck, so you have to pull the throttle further into reverse and then slam it forward. I was thinking about trying to re-adjust the cable and was looking over the shift handle, which is very loose and sloppy, and noticed that there is a bolt missing from the bottom side on the handle, under the pivot, that goes in at about a 45 degree angle. I'm wondering if this (the missing bolt and slop in the handle) could be the problem or if I should just go for the re-adjusting. It shifts fine into reverse and forward, and out of forward.<br />Thanks, Nate

Re: shifting trouble

I would get that problem taken care of first. Get everything put together right before you start making adjustments.
