HI, all. I own a Mercruiser I/O which has an interrupt switch to allow you to shift. My neighbor has an Mercury Outboard and I was wondering how it works on these? Same principle? Thanks, Gary

Re: shifting

Hi, tashasdaddy. I'm sorry I don't know the details. I can find out easy enough tomorrow. Not even sure why I want to know. Just the curious type. I figure there has to be something to help disengage the gears from foward or reverse. I'll get the particulars on the engine tomorrow and write back. Thanks for responding. Gary

Re: shifting

If the boat is a i/o the switch mentioned is a momentary ignition kill switch that kills the engine at the point of gear engagement to lesson the stress on the gear set. If its not set correctly the shifter hammers when shifted into gear and hangs when shifting out of gear. I had a pair of them yrs ago on a Sea Ray and when they were off you could tell.

Yes they do.......and are responsible for a lot of the "it dies when I put it in gear" problems.
