Hello again everone.

I am still in the process of parting out my 1987 Mercury 70HP Motor which died suddenly last month. I listed and sold the lower unit on EBay recently. I spouted off and said I would ship the unit off for $75.00 Now, I live in Florida, and the guy who purchased the Lower Unit lived all the way up in Northern Michigan. Uh-Oh I thought. This may bite me in the *****.

Have any of you guys ever tried to find a box big enough (and strong enough) for a lower unit? Very difficult to say the least. Here is what I ended up doing, and it worked out perfectly.

I measure the demensions of the unit, and decided to make a crate to fit (sort of like a coffin) out of wood. I had some 1x8 Pine board left from a job. I went and purchased one sheet of the OSB chip board from the big Orange Home Improvement store. I alreadt had some drywall screws to screw it all together. I lined the box with old carpet and padding from my neighbors remodel. I assembled the entire box, crated the the Lower unit, and took it to a local supermarket to weigh it on the scale that your wife avoids as she exits the store. It totaled 86 LBS. I contacted FED-EX Ground, and they shipped the entire crate to Michigan for $63.00.

My worries were over. I KNOW the unit will arrive in perfect condition. Check out the photos attached, and I hope it helps somebody out there who is wondering how to ship the odd shaped Lower Unit.

That box looks pretty beefy! Just incase you have to ship out other big parts. You might try calling to a couple of big dealers first. Sometimes they have just received the part you're shipping out in a factory made box and will be happy to give it to you rather than pay to have it carted away. It's worked for me a few time in the past.
