I am traveling to Portland Oregon next week to go on a Sturgeon Charter with my oldest son. It is a college graduation present. I hope to get enough fish to bring some home. The charter captain says customers usually have somewhere around 20lbs to bring home. If we both get fish, that is too much to carry on the plane. Has anyone ever done this before? Does fedex or ups do this? I am not sure how one goes about this and hope someone can point me in the right direction.

You won't have to worry about shipping and the pics will last you more than one lifetime!!!

C&Ring Sturgeon will only make them bigger and more abundant!

Re: Shipping Fish

I usually get to the mouth of the Columbia River about every two years to fish for Sturgeon. I purchase a cheap cooler that the fish will fit in, add a little ice and tape it up. I did it in Alaska last year & brought home about 70 lbs. of fish.
The airlines always accepts the package (it just a little expensive). They used to accept styrofome coolers but no more. The cooler just gets shipped like if you had an extra bag.
Congrats to your son & happy fishing...

Around here Sturgeon are much, much bigger than 20lbs. They have been reported at over 300lbs in the Ottawa River. So I don't understand about the Captain's comment about 20lbs.

Re: Shipping Fish

Thanks for the replies. The captain told me most people generally bring that much home. He expects us to mostly CPR and we will. I just want enough to have a fish cookout with the family to cap the trip. We are going to fish for big ones on Wednesday and try for keepers on Thursday. I guess I will call the airline tomorrow and get all the details.

Miner49er, who do you charter with? I am chartering with Charlie of NW fishing adventures.

Re: Shipping Fish

I charter with Pacific Salmon Charters out of Illwaco, Wa. In all the years I have been fishing the Columbia, I never went home empty handed with this charter.
Good luck when you hook a big one

Re: Shipping Fish

Well, I am hooked. We fished for Sturgeon on the Willamette and Columbia. On the Willamette it is C&R, and boy did we. Caught a 10', 8', 7' and several 5' and 6' on Wednesday morning. By noon, aching backs and forearms and sore cheeks from grinning the whole time. I have never had so much fun fishing and the weather was perfect. Didn't bring anything home but memories, but that is enough. I will go back.
