I can only help you based on my experience shipping new outboards across the border using a trucking company.

You will need a customs inspection to clear the border. This usually takes place at the destination's port of entry. Here, the shipper will need to supply the customs officer with the bill of lading, including detailed sales receipts with full description of product, $ amount of purchase, manufacturer's country of origin, and emissions verification. Usually the package will be physically opened and inspected. It is best to have the seller provide a copy of this information in the crate.

The shipping company may require you to pay a bond on the outboard before they can release it to customs. Also if you yourself are unable to sign the paperwork at the port of entry, then you must obtain and pay for a Power of Attorney to do it for you. You can do all this over the fax, or hire a customs broker to do it for you.

The shipping company can help you out with all this stuff. But it could cost $100-$400.

I have purchased outboard stuff from Canada on ebay w/no problems or extra expense. The 9.5's can be shipped by UPS in 2 boxes...remove the lower unit & cowling & ship in one box; the rest in another. Make sure it is well packed, the spray in foam works well. Ups will be around $100 plus whatever the seller charges to pack it. Insure each box for the cost of the motor.

In 1991 I bought some Farm equipment in Canada and brought it back to the US. As everything was originally made in the US I didn't have any big problems, but as it was a number of truck loads, I used a trucking company and a Customs Broker to handle all the paperwork.

If the motor was originally made in the US, there is no problem, just declare it as returned US product. For Japanese Motors that have never been in the US, you may have to pay customs on the declared value. You and the shipper can do the paperwork yourself or have a "Broker" do it. UPS and FEDEX both can probably handle it and the paperwork for you. If it is a Japanese motor I think I would have a "Broker" handle everything.

Re: Shipping outboard to U.S. from Canada

I bought a new Yamaha 15 hp 4-cycle engine in summer 2002 and carried it thru the port of entry myself. New outboard engines are duty free. The people who sold me the engine asked that I stop at Canadian customs to get a stamp on a form they gave me so they could get a tax deduction on the sale. I mailed back the form to them in self addressed envelope they gave me. Canadian custome did look at the engine in the trunk of my car before stamping the form. There were no charges involved. :)
