Shoot through transducer

I've been reeding about transducers, especially the ones that are inside the boat and not invasive to the hull. Most seem to be used in fiberglass boats. Does this also work with aluminum boats?

Re: Shoot through transducer

Some transducers are designed to work with thin section aluminum. Most are not. The signal does not attenuate thru aluminum very well.

Re: Shoot through transducer

Airmar does not recommend it. The transducer's sensitivity will be reduced transmitting through the metal hull, so you will not be able to see as deeply into the water. However installation in an aluminum hull is acceptable if the thickness is 3.8 mm (0.15",3/16") or less. The transducer must be epoxied directly to the aluminum hull. Use Airmar models P72, P79, or M260.

Re: Shoot through transducer

Do not confuse the reduced sensitivity with depth reading. They are two completely separate functions. While the unit’s sensitivity (ability to “see” individual objects) will be compromised because of the frequency shifts as the signal passes thru the aluminum, the loss of signal will have a minimal impact on the unit’s maximum deep capability. Your maximum depth may go from something like 500’ to 450’ ft.

Re: Shoot through transducer

Thanks Guys. This unit has poor sensitivity anyway but works great for depth. It's a eagle but I don't know if the transducer is the right one. I bought it at a rummage sale for $20 and had to make a conector for the transducer. Aaron
