I have a 84 Chaparal 278 XLC, and want to mount my fishfinder (Eagle 480 Fish Mark) transducer in the bilge. Does anyone know if the hull is solid cosntruction, and how well the transducer will work in this area?

Get a plastic bottle (windshield washer fluid for one) and cut away both top and bottom. Shape bottom to fit your boat's contour where you want to mount transducer.

RTV it in place just good enough to hold water.

Go out to some likely looking spot and fill bottle with water.

Put transducer over the side and look around getting an idea of performance if there was no boat hull involved.

Put it in the container full of water and take a second set of data including holding it at the angle you'll be mounting it. Doesn't matter what the hull is like bas you are getting realtime operational data and either it works or it doesn't to your satisfaction.

This will pretty much give you your answer as there probably be a slight difference when epoxy mounted.....probably unnoticable.

Thanks Mark.

I was getting the boat ready this weekend, and realized the transducer for my depth finder is mounted in the bilge. I've been wondering where it was, now I know! I'm not sure if there is enough room elswhere in the bilge to mount the fishfinder transducer. I'll experiment

I screwed my transom mount transducer to the frame behind the gas tank on my '88 SeaRay. I mounted it flat to the fiberglass, which did not have any core. The residual water in the bilge keeps it wet, so I do not need to epoxy or put it in a mineral oil bubble.
