to make a long story short, i had a knock coming from one cylinder on my 2000 115hp yamaha. did a compression test, test came back at 3 cylinders had 120 and one had 40. took the heads off and noticed the piston was damaged as well as the cylinder wall. so my question is roughley how many shop hours should it take to replace 1 piston, rings and bore the cylinder wall 20 over. I just got an outragous estimate from a tech at 2900.00 for this job, witch sounds way to much. to break it down parts would be about 225.00 and labor would be 2700.00, or he could rebuild all 4 for 3300.00 Any responses would be much appreciated.

Labor cost is 3 to 4 times the average cost for a 4 cylinder for our area. Another estimate would be in order.

Re: shop cost for piston and ring replacement

Just out of curiosity, which cylinder had the failed components? The number 2 can get hammered pretty hard from the rev limiter function. I had problems with the number 2 on a motor I recently bought resulting in the need to replace the piston, rings, connecting rod, bearings, and crank. There was however no damage done to the piston or the cylinder walls. The connecting rod is sold as an assembly with the piston. I know that the parts are pricey, I decided to replace all four ring sets since I had it all torn apart anyhow and they were about 70 dollars for each set. I am doing all of my own work though, so I can't tell you what my labor costs are. I'd look into the cost for a new head just to be able to compare. Sometimes there is very little savings in paying the labor to get it repaired versus buying a replacement and having it installed.

I just had a similar problem. Piston/cylinder scuffing in my #5. Once the engine is broken down there are a lot of "might as well's". I ended up having every cylinder honed and re-ringed. New main bearings. New rod bearings. Injectors cleaned and tested. New rod bolts. New O2 sensor (preventitive). I spent $3700.

By the way, my cylinder was barely scuffed and they needed to go 40 over.

Good luck.

its hard to say, but usually a single piston replacement is a patch and patches fail.
that motor is a simple one to rebuild, however check everything, pay close attention to the center main beaing check valve. do it once do it right and it lives a long time. biggest issue is finding out why it died the first time. if you dont odds are high it will die twice.
