Short leg to long leg

My Evinrude 115 has a short leg. I've got it as low as it will go but can't trim it without it ventilating.

This is on a Starcraft with a rebuilt transmon (I took out an I/O) but I don't want to go lower on the transom as it is near the waterline as it is.

Is it difficult to change to a long leg assuming I can find the parts (and what would I need?).

Or am I better off finding a similar long leg that uses the same controls etc.?

Why not a jack plate? Then you can set it where ever ya' want. Much easier than changing out a midsection......and probably cheaper too.

Okay.

I admit I'm not really sure how a jackplate work and what it would do to lower my motor (or does it just hang it farther back?).

Me need an edumacation on these thingys ;)

Oh, and since I plan to switch between a leg and a jet, and someone else suggested a jack plate for the jet issue, I'm thinking I should learn.

I did the same search and what I'm seeing is this is a way to lift a long-leg up. I want to lower a short leg. I'm concerned even tryin to drop an inch that the steering bar is going to have a clearance problem with the motor lower.

Yep....see the point on the steering. Always a problem with a jackplate. Hmmmmm.....Just curious.....how high above the keel of the boat does the anti-cav plate set?

From looking at the boat, you wouldn't think I had a problem. The cav plate is pretty close to the bottom of the boat.

What I'm finding is that I can't run with the motor trimmed out at all. It has to be trimmed all the way down (right next to the boat) or the prop starts ventilating. Not sure if it is an issue with the hull design or my modifications, but I feel I should be able to trim up and that I need to be less than an inch lower.

DId get it to work one day with two spare batteries for the electric, two full fuel tanks and my buddy at the back. I could trim up and not ventilate.

What you have to remember is that with more of the lower unit in the water, the performance of the boat will be reduced. Raising the engine enhances the performance but with raising, you lose trim range. My 90's cav plate sets a good inch above the keel, but I only have about a 1/4 of the full trim range. But then I don't really need it.....with just me in the boat. The bigger load you have, the more trim range you will have.

Maybe you don't have a problem...how's the rig running now as far as top end?

Slow.

I get about 32 mph by GPS. But I think I'm dropping a cylinder as well.

It really did seem to speed up the one time I got it trimmed out (but of course I forgot to bring the GPS) but without being able to trim out I seem to be in the water too much.
