I have a four leaf spring with a 27" length from eye to eye. Can I use one with 26"? I should be able to move the link plate closer to fit the smaller springs right?

Are you sure your old springs aren't just spread out a bit?
Also, you can adjust a bit of length by changing between various equalizer bar lengths on some.
They do make 27" springs but they're not very common, most are either 25 1/4" or 30". Most all of the one's I've replaced were all 25 1/4".

Do I need to measure the springs while it is off the trailer? The trailer is from the 1960's and I don't think the springs been changed since.

The springs need to be unloaded, and there will be some 'spreading' of the springs from their original size. If you have fixed eye hangers, you can also measure the bolt centers of those hangers. Got any pics of your setup?
Some of those older trailers can be quite different from todays rigs.

I bought 4 springs from Champion trailers last week. They were an odd size (double-eye, 23.5 inches) for a 1972 trailer. The folks there were VERY knowledgeable, and answered questions that I had not even thought of. Give them a call, or stop by if you are close to Slidell, La.

Not only is there Champion Trailers but any good local spring shop should be able to match up a set that will work. I normally call this guy, greatwolftrailers.com, he's been great at getting me what I need.
