Decisions decisions. Obviosly would love to save the cash and do it myself but seems a bit complicated. I have an oem service manual thats pretty good for mostly everything and I've done alot myself, just seems like the carb rebuild can get hairy with syncronizing, etc. Should I attempt it or take it to the marina so they could check timing too? Its a 1988 Force 85Hp.
Thanks

If you have some basic mechanical experience you can do it. Hardest part is doing the link & sync, and that's not very difficult. Just take your time and maybe take pictures for reference if you have a digital camera.

Most marinas send them out to be rebuilt. You can try but look in the book and get it done professionally. It will cost but it will be done right.J

I agree with both posts above. I always do my own work and I'm no professional mechanic, let me tell ya. With the help of my Seloc manual (which confuses me sometimes) and the guys on this board I usually get my problems straightened out.

I just rebuilt my carbs, nothing more than a good cleaning, a couple gaskets, and replacing the inlet needles. Oh yeah, adjusting the floats too, which was not that difficult once I figured it out.

I still have doubts though that I have everything exactly right which makes Jerry's post spot on. I do feel that I can dial it in though with the help of this board and more education on my part.

I'd say go ahead and do it yourself. If you really don't feel that comfortable removing everything, at least make sure the throttle plate is open all the way on the carbs when you are on full throttle on your remote control. Check linkages as well. Also, John from MD has explained in another post how to attempt to clean the carbs without taking them off.

Thanks for the advice all. Well I decided to do it myself. I think i can, I think i can. Just pulled the whole carb assembly off and will be taking it home with me to rebuild over the week. Hopefully I can find some rebuild kits at the local marina and be able to complete this by next weekend. I'll post my progress.
Thanks again to everyone.

Does your job pay you 100 bucks an hour? That's what the marina will charge so that's what your time would be worth. Makes the decision simple.

IMO getting them off can be the hardest part congrats.. experience towards cleaning carbs is useful and chances are you will be doing it again. get a manual and refer to this site and it will save you time and time again..

Try west marine and search this site to make sure your force doesn't share carbs with a mercury equivalent(merc built force).. good luck
