My current engine is an old 87 evinrude 175hp and went KAH-PUT last week. It is going to cost around 2500 dollars to repair. I cant really afford a 16k honda that i dream about so i have been looking something used. I found a 97' 250 yamaha Saltwater Series II motor in the classfieds locally for 3500. IS this a good motor? is this a good price?what can i do to minimize being screwed?

note the engine is not on a boat, if i take it to a impartial mechanic can they do a compression test and fire it up?

thanks
jeff

Howdy, Jeff.

Welcome to iboats. :)

What boat, Jeff? What HP is it rated for?

175 to 250 is a big jump, nearly 40%, and a bad idea if your boat is not rated for the 250.

Your Evinrude is not even 20 yet. That is not "old".

In what way did it go "Ka-Put"?? What is wrong and what is the $2500 for?

I think I would rather have a rebuilt Evinrude in like new condition for $2500 than an unknown anything for $3500.

per the mechanic , the fly wheel, stator, lower water pump need to be replaced. and the lower end needs to be pulled apart and resealed. compression is good tho.

i have a 21 chris craft , which i was told came from the manufacture with either a 175 or 200 evin. Whether or not it can handle a 250hp is a good question.

You need to get a second price quote from another mechanic. Your boat should have a decal or plate with the maximum horsepower that can be installed. Where are you located?

I have the same engine working perfectly on my Stamus in Boca Raton that I was just about to advertise for sale because I am changing to twins. Engine was rebuilt two years ago. Price would be below market if interested I can be contacted at k.rodrego@gmail.com.
Thanks,
Rod
