I have a 2013 Bass Tracker Pro 165 with a Mercury 4 stroke 40 hp motor that I purchased new in August 2012. With a full load (fuel, gear and 2 people) it will rev to up to 6000 rpms and hit around 31mph with more throttle left which will take it over 6000 rpms but no increase in speed. I am currently running the 13x26 prop that was standard equipment.

With throttle being left I have considered going with a 14 pitch prop - possibly a Spitfire by Mercury. The prop selector on the Mercury site suggests a 14 pitch spitfire and it calculates the max rpms at 5750 with a top speed of 38 mph.

Thoughts?

" I am currently running the 13x26 prop that was standard equipment." you then stated Merc site suggests 14 p spitfire... 13x26.. pitch is the second #(26).. 13 is dia..

clarify what your saying here.......based on your performance language...increasing pitch (1) would be prudent..

I would make sure the tach setting is correct for that motor. Makes a difference if the tach is connected to read stator pulses or actual coil firing for a 4 cycle.

If you check the 40 merc 4 st tests you will see that a 13 is pretty much right on.boats from 600 to 870 mostly 13" ( 711 lbs 12"
rpm from 5500 to 6000.
As suggested your tach is very likely set wrong or defective.

As said. Make sure your tac is working right...recommendations are based off that...
