Should I get another dog?

I have a beagle/basset hound mix that's about 11 years old. He's very nice to me and anyone else he knows well, but if any strange person, dog, cat, squirrel, etc comes around he will EAT them. When he was younger he made friends with a few neighborhood dogs, but he hasn't been around another dog in at least 5 years.

I'm thinking about getting another. Not sure what kind, maybe a lab or something. Do you think it would **** off my current dog? I mean, obviously they would have to get used to each other for a while. My dog looks so bored during the day, I would think he would like another dog to keep him company. No? Anybody else have problems bringing a new dog into the house? He's never learned to get along with my cat, but she makes a wild racoon look tame. (the 75 pound beagal that has tried to take on a full grown bull is afraid of the 5 pound cat :) )

I'd suggest taking him somewhere on a leash that's selling puppies to see if he has a problem with them...

As long as he can be the Beta around the house (you are the Alpha) he wont mind, but he may bully the new dog a lot.

One daughter has an elderly yellow Lab and a young Golden. The older dog is very laid back, but clearly top dog.

Another daughter has a Heinz red runt (named Red), a massive black Lab and a new adolescent Lab female. Since Red came first, he is top dog and bullies the others (he can walk under their bellies) without mercy.

I think your basseagle will be okay with a new dog as long as he can maintain top dog status.

I'll tell you what ZO, I would think twice about getting a young lab if you have an older dog. A Lab will be on that beagle 24/7. He will never have a moments peace. Could make the old boy even more miserable.

Most of you upper crusters own lap dogs maybe thats the way to go. :D Perhaps a chi waa waa

Hello ZmOz We also have a dog that was very protective growled at everyone even some family members, he is a lab cocker mix. Till we got our puppy she is a 3/4 lab and 1/4 dalamation. he smelled her and never tried to bite her now she gets on to him when he barks or growls it has calmed him down a lot. he now has now growled at the family and even let a couple of strangers pet him. But we tried to get a male golden retreiver mix puppy last year and he snapped at it and bit his neck. My brother in law took it and had to shoot it it attacked his pit bull the pit just stood there bleeding and not doing anything to the golden retreiver go fig. It was like my dog knew this dog was not good.
I would try to get a female get them both fixed and it will tame them both down plus puppy training is easier.
Serenity
